چکیده
The chloride selective channel from Torpedo electroplax, ClC-0, is the prototype of a large gene family of chloride channels that behave as functional dimers, with channel currents exhibiting two non-zero conductance levels. Each pore has the same conductance and is controlled by a subgate, and these have seemingly identical fast gating kinetics. However, in addition to the two subgates there is a single slower `supergate' which simultaneously aects both channels. In the present paper, we consider a six state Markov model that is compatible with these observations and develop approximations as well as exact results for relevant properties of groupings of openings, known as bursts. Calculations with kinetic parameter values typical of ClC-0 suggest that even simple approximations can be quite accurate. Small deviations from the assumption of independence within the model lead to marked changes in certain predicted burst properties. This suggests that analysis of these properties may be helpful in assessing independence/non-independence of gating in this type of channel. Based on simulations of models of both independent and non-independent gating, tests using binomial distributions can lead to false conclusions in each situation. This is made more problematic by the diculty of selecting an appropriate critical time in de®ning a burst empirically. Ó 2000 Published by Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we establish a mathematical model of two species with stage structure and the relation of predator±prey, to obtain the necessary and sucient condition for the permanence of two species and the extinction of one species or two species. We also obtain the optimal harvesting policy and the threshold of the harvesting for sustainable development. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rig...

We consider a single-species model which is composed of several patches connected by linear migration rates and having logistic growth with a threshold. We show the existence of an aggregating mechanism that allows the survival of a species which is in danger of extinction due to its low population density. Numerical experiments illustrate these results. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights ...

A two-dimensional bio®lm model was developed based on the concept of cellular automata. Three simple, generic processes were included in the model: cell growth, internal and external mass transport and cell detachment (erosion). The model generated a diverse range of bio®lm morphologies (from dense layers to open, mushroom-like forms) similar to those observed in real bio®lm systems. Bulk nutri...

In this paper extensions to an existing procedure for generating locally identi®able reparameterisations of unidenti®able systems are presented. These extensions further formalise the constructive nature of the methodology and lend themselves to application within symbolic manipulation packages. The extended reparameterisation procedure is described in detail and is illustrated with application...
